Oral health, like most things, is often taken for granted. Yet, it is an essential part of your everyday life because your oral health is a huge indicator of your general health. Your mouth is full of living features: the teeth, gum tissues, tongue, and cheeks. All of these are connected to the bloodline that runs throughout your body. If an infection is present within your mouth, it can easily pass on to other symptoms through your bloodstream.
Cavities are tiny holes in the teeth where bacteria have eaten away at the tooth enamel. In order to prevent cavities, you must understand that cavity prevention is up to you. Here are some simple things you can do to easily prevent cavities from ruining your smile:
- Floss your teeth daily. Flossing only takes a short amount of time, yet it is the most important part of oral hygiene. Floss removes damaging plaque from the gum line and between the teeth that brushing cannot reach.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day. You’ve heard it since you were young, but it is still true. You need to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes at a time. Brushing removes plaque that has been loosened by floss, and it helps wash away bacteria inside the mouth.
- Limit sugary and acidic drinks. Prolonged exposure to acidic beverages and sugary drinks can significantly increase your risk for cavities. By drinking these frequently, the teeth are continuously bathed in harmful liquids that will eat away at your teeth. Limit sodas, coffee, alcohol, and juice to once a day (or less), and brush your teeth after consuming them.
- Drink more water. Water is essential for life, and it is the most beneficial thing that you can consume. Not only does water keep you hydrated, but it also helps to keep the mouth rinsed and free of harmful bacteria.
- Stop smoking. Smoking and tobacco use can cause many serious medical problems. These bad habits can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer. If you are a smoker, make it your goal to quit.
